The ads will be limited to the Messenger’s home screen, and will not intrude upon conversations between Messenger users. According to a company spokesperson, the ad targeting will be similar to the ad targeting on Facebook itself, and will not be based on Messenger conversations. Facebook believes that the ads will be useful for businesses looking to connect and communicate with customers. It is unknown when advertisements will be coming to the public.
